Why is the "truth" confusing? When someone tells you "I have to tell you the truth" the comes back with "I am confused, I need to think."
To me that just kinda says, "I need time to get my story together"
The truth is the truth, nothing confusing about it.
You wouldn't be in this mess if you were just honest to begin with instead of waiting to get caught.
